However, you will find CV joints in all-wheel drive and front-wheel-drive cars. It is essential for a front-wheel-drive car to operate. Also, some rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive cars will also have a CV joint on their driveshafts.

There is more than one CV joint in a car. If you have a front-wheel-drive car, then you have four joints, two on each side of the axle or driveshaft. However, if any of them goes bad, you might be wondering, should you replace the other, considering the cost.

If the CV boot which encases the joints is damaged, your car may experience premature damage to the cv joint. However, the CV boot is there to prevent dirt and debris from getting into the joints, but they can crack due to aging and excessive dirt. So, when they crack, they let dirt in, thereby causing damage to the CV joints.  Before going into what it will cost you to replace the CV Joint, check out the symptoms of a bad CV joint in the section below.

Symptoms of Bad/Failing CV Joint

There are certain warning signs to look out for when it comes to failing CV joints. They are as follows;

  • Tire Edge Grease

If you notice the grease along the edge of your tire, particularly from a tear or tiny crack, it could be a sign that your CV joint is faulty. When it is significantly damaged, darker-coloured grease might be visible on the rim and wheel’s interior.

  • Loud Noises When Turning Steering Wheels

When you turn the steering wheel and hear noises like a clicking sound or popping sound, it’s very likely you have a broken or worn CV joint. To be sure, you can follow the steps below to test it;

  • Shift the gear into reverse
  • Turn the wheel to one side,
  • Step on the gas pedal.
  • Then, move in a circle, so make sure the area around you is clear. As you move backward in a circle, the popping sounds should get louder if you have a bad CV joint.
  • Bouncy Driving

You likely have a bad CV joint if you’re driving on a flat paved road and your vehicle is still bouncing around. To verify this, go to an auto shop that repairs transmissions.

  • Vibrations on The Steering Wheels

A faulty CV joint will vibrate while you’re driving. And CV joints in this condition will not be able to balance properly during rotation. So, the more you accelerate, the more intense the vibrations will become.

However, when vibrations become too excessive, the vehicle will become more difficult to control and your overall riding experience will be impacted. Meaning that the drive will become less comfortable and less safe for everyone in the car. Therefore, the only solution here is to replace the CV joint.

  • Movement Causes Knocking Sounds

A CV joint that is worn out from being used too much will cause a knocking sound. The sound can come from the inner joint of a front-wheel-drive car. Moreover, for rear-wheel drive, it can come from either the outer or inner joints. These sounds can also come from the differential gears.

So, to perform a self-diagnosis of the joint problem put the vehicle in reverse and accelerate, then decelerate. Next, alternate back and forth between acceleration and deceleration and listen for louder knocking sounds. If there’s a louder noise, is proof that the CV joint is faulty

What will it cost to replace CV Joint in my Car?

If you notice any of the above symptoms in your car, and you want to replace, it but don’t know what it will cost you, this section will give you a clue on how much you should budget. A CV joint can cost between $95 and $210. Getting a mechanic to replace it will be between $165 and $800.

However, the price mainly depends on whether you’re replacing a double or single axle. So, the constant-velocity joint(CV) replacement cost of a double axle will be approximately twice as expensive as a single axle, with the cost of the parts for a double running between $150 and $400. This makes the total cost of getting a technician to perform the replacement between $230 and $1180.

Another factor to consider is the make and model of your vehicle and how difficult it will be for them to perform the replacement job. That is, the more time they need, the higher the service cost.

How to Perform a Cv Joint Replacement

If the CV joint replacement cost is a bit high for you, then you can replace it by yourself to save some money. Keep in mind that you will need the right tools and it will take quite some time.

Note;  if you’re not sure about your mechanical skills or you’re not a DIY enthusiast, do not replace it yourself. To kick off the DIY replacement, do the following;

  • Put your vehicle on jack stands and remove the wheels.
  • Take out the cotter pin from the axle nut, and then remove the axle nut.
  • Take out the brake assembly’s caliper.
  • Then, unbolt the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  • Next, unbolt the hub from the strut tower.
  • Take out the old CV joint.
  • Insert the new CV joint into your transmission housing and then your axle hub assembly.
  • Refasten the assembly the way you remove them.

These are steps to perform CV joint replacement at home.
