The leadership & advocacy for Women in Africa [LAWA] was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington DC. It was established in order to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa.

The women lawyers must be committed to returning home to their countries to advance the status of women and girls throughout their careers.

Georgetown University Law Center Leadership And Advocacy For Women In Africa Fellowship 2021-2022

The program runs by the LAWA fellowship lasts for a period of about 14 months.  The successful applicants will attend the Georgetown law Centers Foundation of American law and U.S. legal English course.

The unique thing is the Georgetown is laying emphasis on international women’s human rights and completes a major graduate thesis. Fellow also participate in professional development seminars and networking events with current U.S. law schools.

Students of U.S. law school after graduation has the opportunity to complete an internship through the LAWA fellowship. Note that note every fellow is selected by the organization for an internship.

Eligibility For The Fellowship

Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa is currently seeking application from applicants with the following criteria

  • The application must be submitted from any country in Africa
  • To apply, candidates must have the fund to cover non-tuition expenses
  • There must be evidence of insurance obtain before you arrive United State for the program
  • The program does not accept candidates directly from LL.B. studies
  • You must be a women’s human rights lawyer from Africa to be considered
  • The strongest applicants tend to be about 5-10 years out of law school
  • Men and women who are committed to women’s right are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Applicants must be able to speak and English

Application Document For The Georgetown University Law Center Leadership And Advocacy For Women In Africa Fellowship 2021-2022

All applicants should submit all the following documents to apply for the program. They are;

  • A complete application form
  • Current resume or CV indicating your employment history, education, published materials, special honors award scholarship or fellowships, and membership in organization or community activity
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcript from the institution granting your law degree
