Logan Science Journalism Program 2024 (funding available)

Founded in 1986, the Logan Science Journalism program gives science journalists, writers, editors, and broadcast journalists an opportunity to get away from deadlines for stories and get their hands dirty in basic environmental or biomedical research.

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, one of the world’s most active venues for scientific discovery, provides research training to journalists who are chosen for the program. The biomedical hands-on research course and the environmental hands-on research course are the two initial, intense courses that the fellows select from.

FundingĀ

Logan Science Journalism Program Fellows receive lodging, meals, and transportation to and from Woods Hole, as well as full program costs for the Hands-On research Course and other events. If approved for the program, foreign nationals will be reimbursed for their visa fees and will need to obtain one.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must have at least three years of experience as professional science writers, editors, producers, or journalists. Applicants without considerable prior experience in scientific research will be given preference. Although not required, having a rudimentary understanding of biological concepts and procedures is beneficial.
  • Reporters who took part in the Biomedical Hands-On Research Course in the past and vice versa.
  • We highly encourage applications from underrepresented industries. Applications are open to foreign nationals. If admitted into the program, foreign nationals need to have a valid visa to enter the United States.

Application

  • You can save an application once you start it and come back to finish it at a later time. The following needs to be included in your online application:
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • A 600-word statement outlining your professional objectives, journalism background, and how this fellowship will advance your career is required.
  • A succinct description of previous laboratory or research experience in science.
  • Four writing or editing pieces in the field of science (text, audio, video, or multimedia). Samples (which may be translations) must be in English. Within the last two years, at least two samples should have been released (30 minutes). Samples for broadcasts should not exceed 30 minutes. We request that editors or broadcast directors provide succinct explanations of their roles in each example.
  • The titles of two sources. One should, if at all possible, be your professional work’s most recent or present supervisor.

In conclusion, the Logan Science Journalism Program 2024 is a great opportunity for science journalists, writers, editors, and broadcast journalists to enhance their skills and gain hands-on experience in basic biomedical or environmental research. The program provides full funding, including lodging, meals, and transportation, for selected fellows.
