Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award 2024 (up to $12,500)

  • A $12,500 grant is given to a promising early-career nonfiction writer to support their work on a narrative that reveals truths about the human condition as part of the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award.
  • The award was first given out in 2015. This was supported by people and organizations that were impacted by the life and work of award-winning and nomadic journalist Matthew Power, who aimed to live and communicate the experiences of the people and places he covered. While on duty in Uganda in March 2014, Power, a longstanding friend of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, passed away.
  • The awareness that many significant stories must be reported from a distance and that newspapers don’t always have the means to send a writer to cover the story is the basis for the prize.

Award

  • After the winning proposal is announced, the following distribution of funds will take place:
  • $6,000. $3,500 upon completion and approval by the award committee; and $3,000 upon proof of significant progress, often a first draft.

Eligibility

  • The following groups are not eligible for the competition: journalists holding staff positions at reputable media outlets who the committee determined are ineligible because they can fund such a project on their own; NYU affiliates and their immediate families; and NYU graduates receiving degrees dated within two years of the application deadline.

Application

The submission deadline is February 22, 2024. The deadline to complete and deliver the final work is December 31, 2024.

In conclusion, this is a great opportunity for early-career nonfiction writers looking to receive financial support for their work. With the goal of uncovering truths about the human condition, this prestigious award provides up to $12,500 to the winning writer.
