MIT Admission Requirements

MIT participates in the Quest Bridge National College Match program, which its motive is to lift the percentage of talented low-income students attending the nation’s best universities and the ranks of national leadership itself. Before jumping over to the application portal, you need to know the MIT admission criteria.

Don’t bother searching for the requirements because they’re all listed below. Below are the requirements you need to apply.

Secondary School Preparation

Although MIT does not have any required high school classes, applicants are expected to have enrolled in a broad, rigorous program in high school. A strong academic foundation in high school will help students make the most of the Institute when they are here. Advice and suggestions on how to prepare for MIT are available on the Admissions website.

Applicant Interviews

MIT recommends that applicants interview with a member of the MIT Educational Council members if available. Council members are MIT graduates who have volunteered to interview on behalf of the Office of Admissions. Applicants will be given further information about interview details during the application process if they have an active application.

Standardized Testing Requirements

The school is extremely selective and competitive. Meeting their GPA requirements and SAT/ACT requirements is very important for you to get past their first round of filters and proving your academic preparation. If you don’t meet their expectations, your chance of getting in is nearly is very low.

GPA Requirements

Lots of schools out there specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

Seeing the competition in the school admission, the GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. The average GPA is 4.17. With a GPA of 4.17, the school requires you to be at the top of your class. That is, you will need nearly straight as in all your classes to compete with other applicants.

Moreover, if you’re currently junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4.17, you’ll need a higher SAT or ACT score (that’s if the school currently considers SAT/ACT as admission criteria).

SAT and ACT Requirements

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the school will continue to suspend our usual SAT/ACT testing requirement for the 2021–22 application cycle. It will not require the SAT or the ACT test from first-year applicants applying in fall 2021, or transfer applicants applying in either fall 2021 or spring 2022

Applicants who have already taken the SAT/ACT, or who can find a forthcoming opportunity to do so safely are encouraged to submit their scores with the understanding that they help the school to be more accurate in evaluating their preparedness for MIT.

Applicants who have not already taken the SAT/ACT test yet, and cannot find an opportunity to do so safely are discouraged from taking the test, in order to protect their personal health, as well as the health of their family and community.

The school will not make any negative presumptions regarding academic preparation based solely on the absence of SAT/ACT scores, but will instead make the best, the most informed decision by rigorously assessing other academic aspects of their application like grades, coursework, etc.

Language Requirements

Non-native English speakers are recommended to provide the results of an English proficiency exam if they have been using English for fewer than 5 years or do not speak English at home or in school. The school accepts the following English proficiency exams:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
