By making biodiversity data easier to access, producing knowledge and information, developing capacity, offering policy recommendations, and exhibiting and protecting biodiversity in its national botanical and zoological gardens, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) supports sustainable development in South Africa.

Scholarship for SANBI Postgraduate Student Bursaries 2024

The purpose of the scholarships is to pay for living costs and tuition.

  • Awards: R120,000 for a single year.
  • Masters: R150,000 for two years at a time.
  • Doctorate: three years at R180,000.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • We will only fund full-time studies.
  • Candidates had to be under 35 years old and citizens of South Africa.
  • Any university in South Africa accepts applications.
  • Only studies that align with the goals and research plan of SANBI will be taken into consideration.
  • Candidates cannot hold a job.
  • Previous research will not be funded.
  • Applications for a second master’s, doctoral, or honors degree will not be taken into consideration.
  • When applicants have partial bursaries or scholarships, co-funding will be taken into account.
  • Candidates for master’s programs must have a postgraduate diploma or honors degree.

Application 

A standard application cover sheet must be included with every application.

Applications must include a letter of interest, a two-page project outline, a complete curriculum vitae, certified copies of the applicant’s highest qualification and academic record, as well as identification; two letters of academic recommendation; a letter expressing the applicant’s willingness to supervise from both a potential university supervisor and a SANBI supervisor; and a provisional registration or application from the university.
