Shireen Abu Akleh Fellowship 2024 (Funded)

As part of the second Shireen Abu Akleh Fellowship, ARIJ announces the launch of a competition for a six-month position in its editing department, beginning in mid-January 2024.

In memory of the victim, Shireen Abu Akleh, this gift was initially revealed at the beginning of the fifteenth ARIJ meeting. It was funded by a Palestinian donor who wished to remain anonymous.

Considered a role model for many Arab and Palestinian women, Shireen Abu Akleh was a well-known Palestinian-American journalist who worked for AI Jazeera for 25 years before being killed by an Israeli soldier while covering a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli-Middle East while wearing a blue press vest.

The participating fellow will receive a monthly fee of $800 from ARIJ in addition to travel and lodging expenses in Amman.

Applicants for this fellowship must be Palestinian-born journalists or investigative editors with at least four years of experience in the field, and their applications must include samples of their published work.

In addition, the candidate must be able to finish an inquiry during the fellowship period on topics to be decided upon in consultation with the editorial board, in addition to working full-time with ARJ for six months. A proposal for an investigative investigation must be submitted in order for the fellowship application to be accepted.

The fellowship will start in mid-January 2024, and applications will be accepted from December 1, 2023, until December 31, 2023.
