Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest 2023
Over the last 20 years, readers have submitted more than 470,000 images to the Smithsonian’s annual photo contest. These photos have transported us to the far corners of the earth, captured spectacular, split-second moments, and introduced us to fascinating people and unique landscapes. The following six contest categories are drawn from subjects of special interest to the Smithsonian magazine:
Travel: locales, peoples, or activities in the United States and abroad that convey a sense of place.
The natural world includes animals, plants, and landscapes; climatological features or geological features; and scientific processes and endeavors.
People: portraits and photos of groups or individuals.
Artistic images are visuals that use photography as a creative and imaginative platform to express an idea or concept. These images can be manipulated in any way, either through photo editing software or other techniques.
Prizes
Category winners: $500
Grand prize winner: $2,500
Readers’ Choice winner: $500
Eligibility for the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest 2023
- No prizes are available to anyone connected to the Smithsonian Institution, including staff members, trustees, volunteers, fellows, research associates, and members of their immediate families, as well as other people residing in their homes.
- You can submit a maximum of 15 images per category, for a total of 90 images in the contest.
- The eligibility of awardees will be decided solely at the discretion of the Smithsonian. You must be the original photographer of the submitted images and at least 18 years old in order to be eligible for the 2023 Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest. Participation is not permitted for Smithsonian Institution employees or members of their immediate families.
