Admission Requirements for Undergraduate

Students from all over the world come to attend UCLA, which is part of what makes UCLA great looking at the wide variety of experiences and backgrounds their students bring to the campus community.  Each year the school admits students from about 90 countries. Here is the requirement you need if you want to apply for admission to the school.

Academic Requirements

As an undergraduate, you may apply for admission to the school as a freshman (first-year) or a transfer student. Who is a freshman? A freshman in this context is one who completed secondary school and has not enrolled in a regular session at any college or university.

  • It does not admit students into an undergraduate program who already hold Bachelor’s degrees. And also, do not admit students who have the equivalent of three years (130 quarter-units or more) of transferable university work. That is, you may not disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.
  • Every transfer applicant must be at the junior level, that is, the person must have taken college-level coursework amounting to 90-130 quarter (60-90 semester) credit units.

Thus, the school gives preference to students transferring from California community colleges, including international students.

Education System Requirements

This requirement depends so much on your country and educational system, you may have to meet additional admission requirements. So, endeavor to learn more about country-specific requirements.

Language Requirements for International Students

Proficiency in the English language is an important factor in your success at UCLA. So, if all of your high school/secondary school education was completed in English, you are automatically considered proficient and you do not need to satisfy this requirement.

For students who completed all or some high school or secondary school in a country where English was not the language of instruction, will be required to show English proficiency if they have had less than 3 years of instruction in English.

However, to demonstrate English language proficiency, students are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test (Fall 2021 and 2022 only, under review for Fall 2023).

It looks out for a competitive score above 100 (with sub-scores above 22) on the TOEFL, 7 or above on the IELTS, or a 120 or higher on the Duolingo English Test (DET). Moreover, if you’re admitted to UCLA and your native language is not English, you may also be required to take UCLA’s English-as-a-Second-Language Placement Examination (ESLPE) immediately before the term in which you enter.

Financial Information

This is an important part; UCLA does not award scholarships or financial aid to undergraduate students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the US. Before being admitted, foreign students must prove that they have sufficient funds available to them to pay for their educational and living expenses.

The school also requires that all foreign students on non-immigrant visas have adequate medical insurance during all periods of enrollment.

Transcripts and Official Records

The school needs records from the secondary schools you have attended that show subjects taken and grades received, plus records of any national or government certificates earned.

However, documents of all college or university coursework must also be sent in the original language, along with English translations. Note; do not send these documents now. If you apply and are admitted, your admission packet will have instructions, you’ll follow the instructions given.
